SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
John 14:23-29Read Also
Psalm 67
Acts 16:9-15
Revelation 21:10
Revelation 21:22-22:5
Jesus answered him, "Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father
will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.
Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear
is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me.
I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the
Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach
you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as
the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be
afraid.”
--- John 14: 23-28
Home
to give flesh to the
Master’s words about love and obedience, I’m driven back to that
place where parental love and
discipline modeled a life
that called from us, their
children, an answering obedience and
love.
Never in conflct, these pillars of family
life stood in a blessed
tension, upholding and
strengthening the temple of the home.
Like good parents, God in Christ offers us
love and discipline in full measure. No la-dee-da, wishy-washy
love; no harsh, cruel,
jaw-clinched discipline, God’s hand and heart is measured and balanced, love infused with
discipline, discipline saturated in
love, and presiding over it all, the Teacher-Spirit, nudging and guiding us on
our way. Just like home; just like
family.
And its reward is Peace -- Not as the world gives, calculating and conniving
-- but real Peace, in the home and in the troubled heart.
O Triune God, come dwell within my heart.
And may your blessed peace never depart.

The Weekly Lessons are based on the lectionary texts for the week – usually the Gospel lesson. They are not designed as a formal commentary. Rather, they are the personal reflections and original compositions of The Relay Online editor, Rev. Robin Van Cleef, and offer a jumping off point, using the scriptures as triggers to thought, imagination, and (we hope) empowerment. As you read them, let your own imagination play, and let the Spirit speak to you, leading you where it will. The Gospel Lessons reflected on this site may not be copied, reproduced or otherwise manipulated elsewhere on the internet without the expressed consent of the author. Please also note that while we're unable to quote Bible scripture on these pages, it is permissible to redirect our viewers to Bible passages using hyperlinks to web sites having that authority.
